A Russian bomb kills 33 civilians in eastern Ukraine, as Kyiv's negotiators head to Washington

Reuters reported that a Russian bomb killed 33 civilians in a street in an eastern Ukrainian stronghold on Thursday, citing officials. The ABC said a bus stop was hit; the BBC said buses were struck; the Guardian reported an earlier toll of 30. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the war a dangerous stalemate and said a negotiated settlement should be permanent, enduring and fair. President Zelenskiy said Ukrainian negotiators would visit the US for talks on Friday.

Mass-casualty strikes on civilians shape the terms of any settlement talks.

Australia has given Ukraine military aid and sanctioned Russian people and entities.

Pressure on Russia should rise after attacks on civilians.

Talks are the only route to ending the killing, even on imperfect terms.

Watch what comes out of Friday's talks in the US.
