SpaceX's spectrum deal rattles telecom shares; Deutsche Telekom falls 7%
Reuters reported that SpaceX is taking aim at US wireless carriers with a spectrum acquisition, and that US and European telecom stocks slid on Friday, with Deutsche Telekom shares falling 7 per cent. Bloomberg reported that a US$750 billion rally has lifted SpaceX out of its post-listing funk. We have not reviewed the deal terms.
Spectrum is the licensed airwaves that carry mobile signals. If a satellite company owns more of it, established carriers face a new competitor.
Telstra, Optus and TPG are not named in these reports. Any effect on Australian mobile prices is speculation for now.
Watch for the deal terms and for regulators' reactions.
