Trump says Russia will send the US diesel as prices near records. Zelenskiy calls it an “investment in war”

Trump said on Friday that Russia would immediately supply 300,000 tons of diesel fuel to the United States, after a phone call with Vladimir Putin, Reuters, AP, the Washington Post, NBC and the Guardian reported. The Japan Times said US diesel prices are near a record and have put Republicans at risk before the November 3 congressional elections. The New York Times said Trump spoke of potentially millions of tons in coming months but that Russia has a ban on exporting diesel. The Washington Post said the amount is small compared with US demand. Volodymyr Zelenskiy called the deal an “investment in war”, Reuters reported, and CBS said Russian strikes killed 11 people in Ukraine a day after the announcement. Reuters also reported that Germany will keep its Russia sanctions, and that the Kremlin said Putin downplayed an immediate resumption of Ukraine talks. Al Jazeera said Ukraine struck a Russian fuel site within hours. In Canberra, energy minister Chris Bowen said on Saturday that Australia does not “need or want Russian fuel” and that purchases will remain barred, according to the Guardian, Bloomberg and the South China Morning Post. We did not see Moscow confirm the volume.

It links a domestic price problem to the war. If Washington relaxes pressure on Russian fuel exports, it weakens a lever that Ukraine and Europe have used against Moscow, and it shows how fuel prices are shaping US policy before an election.

Canberra has said it will not buy Russian fuel, but Australia imports most of its refined fuel, so global diesel prices still reach trucking, farming and freight costs here. One 300,000-ton cargo will not move the market, but the signal about sanctions might.

The White House argues that lowering pump prices before the elections is a legitimate priority and that the deal is a practical step.

Critics, including Zelenskiy, say buying Russian fuel funds the war and rewards Moscow while Ukraine is under fire.

The test is whether any diesel actually ships, given the export ban the New York Times noted, and whether Europe follows or holds firm. Watch Brent and diesel futures on Monday, and whether any other government follows Canberra in ruling out Russian fuel.
