Hurricane Isaias makes landfall on the US Gulf Coast as a Category 2 storm

Hurricane Isaias made landfall on Friday night on the northern Gulf Coast near Destin, Florida, CBS News reported, weaker than the Category 3 it had been before; Politico said it came ashore as a dangerous Category 2 hurricane, and NBC said it was downgraded to Category 2 before landfall. CBS said hundreds of thousands of people were left without power. NBC reported on Saturday that the storm was pushing inland with strong winds and heavy rain. CBS had reported earlier that oil producers such as Chevron and Shell were shutting down Gulf production and evacuating offshore platforms.

The US Gulf of Mexico is a major source of oil and gas, so shut-ins can move fuel prices, and the storm adds to supply worries while diesel prices are already high.

Fuel prices in Australia follow global crude with a lag of a week or two, so a Gulf outage could show up at the bowser later this month if it lasts.

Watch the damage count, how quickly Gulf output restarts, and whether oil prices react on Monday.
