Kostecki wins the Bathurst 1000 after the leader runs out of fuel on the final lap

Brodie Kostecki won the 61st Bathurst 1000 on Sunday, October 11, after race leader Anton De Pasquale ran out of fuel on the last lap, the Sydney Morning Herald, ABC, Nine, CODE Sports and The Courier-Mail reported. The Herald named Todd Hazelwood as Kostecki’s co-driver and said it was their second Bathurst win, while ABC’s headline named Davidson, a discrepancy we could not resolve. CODE called it the cruellest finish in Bathurst history. Earlier, Kostecki had lost the lead to Zach Bates after a slow pit stop, the Herald said. Seton led early, and Morris spun at the start. Speedcafe reported that the Supercars Finals Series field was decided after the race.

Bathurst is Australian motorsport’s biggest race, and a late fuel miscalculation that hands the trophy to a rival is the kind of finish that is remembered for years.

If you tipped or backed a driver, check the official classification before you collect. The finishing order is not final until the race officials have confirmed it.

Racing is unforgiving, and Kostecki’s team took the win it was given after an earlier stop went wrong for them too.

A win decided by a rival’s fuel error is a hollow one, and the leader’s team deserves sympathy.

Watch the official classification, any protest, and what the fuel strategy review finds at the De Pasquale team. We will confirm the co-driver’s name when two outlets agree.
