Two Carlton players, Lachie Cowan and Will Hayward, hospitalised in “separate circumstances”

Carlton said that Lachie Cowan and Will Hayward needed hospital treatment on Sunday morning in “separate circumstances”, ABC, the Guardian, the Herald and The Age reported. The Guardian said the club’s brief statement said Hayward suffered a minor cut to his head after a fall. Nine reported that players were hospitalised after “taking drugs”, and the Herald Sun and The Australian pointed to an alleged drug scandal involving the club. The club has not said that, and we are treating those claims as unconfirmed.

Player welfare and illicit-drug rules sit at the centre of the AFL’s integrity framework, and a club statement that leaves the cause unsaid will keep the story open.

If you follow Carlton, expect a fuller statement from the club and the league this week.

Watch for a club or AFL statement and any health update. Until one of them says why the players were admitted, we will not repeat the drug claim as fact.
