Carlton to investigate the Cowan and Hayward hospital incidents and pass the findings to the AFL

Carlton will investigate the incidents involving Lachie Cowan and Will Hayward, who needed hospital treatment in “separate circumstances”, and pass the results to the AFL, The Age and ABC reported on Monday, October 12. The AFL has called for an explanation, four outlets reported. The Herald Sun said the league’s beefed-up drugs policy would not apply in this case. The Guardian reported the players were treated after an off-season night out. Other outlets have alleged drug use; the club has not confirmed that, and we have not repeated it as fact.

The AFL is balancing player welfare with a drug-testing regime that is under review, and a club inquiry sets the tone for any later league action.

If you follow Carlton, nothing changes yet; the investigation has no stated timetable in the items we saw.

A club investigation passed to the AFL is the right process and avoids trial by media.

The league should publish what it finds, because secrecy fuels rumour.

Keep the line between what the club has said and what outlets allege. We will update when the club or the league states a finding.
