Sydney gets a total fire ban in the heat, then a cold front brings a drop of up to 14 degrees
A total fire ban applied to Sydney on Monday, October 12, with temperatures forecast at 37C and a bushfire risk from “dry lightning”, the Guardian reported. News.com.au said Sydney faced a 14-degree drop as a cold front arrived, and the Daily Telegraph reported the city turning down the heat as a cool change rolled in. An “extreme” fire warning was also reported. These are forecasts, and we did not see the day’s maximum temperature.
October fire bans this early in the season are a reminder that the bushfire season now starts sooner, and a sharp cool change can swing winds and fire behaviour.
Check the NSW Rural Fire Service app for your area. A total fire ban means no outdoor fires or fireworks. Expect much cooler weather today.
Early warnings and bans are working: the public knows the rules and the risk.
Fire seasons are lengthening, and the response needs more planning, not just daily warnings.
The change will bring wind shifts as well as cooler air. Watch the RFS warnings rather than the thermometer.
