Red fire ants are found at a Sydney logistics hub in Enfield

A nest of invasive red fire ants was found at a logistics hub in Enfield, in Sydney’s inner west, ABC and the Nine papers (Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Brisbane Times, WAtoday) reported on Tuesday. ABC said specialist detection-dog teams were deployed to the site and a nearby area and that no other nests had been found. Nine said a camera on a scope recorded the ants. We did not see which agency confirmed the find, how many ants were seen, or how the colony reached the site.

Fire ants sting, damage crops and equipment, and are costly to eradicate once established. A find inside a freight hub is a concern because such sites receive goods from many places. That is background from our own knowledge, not from Tuesday’s reports.

If you see ants or a mound you suspect are fire ants, do not disturb them; authorities ask for sightings to be reported through your state’s primary-industries department. Neither point came from Tuesday’s coverage.

The detail that matters is the sweep. One nest found and none nearby is the best early result, so watch for the all-clear or for a second nest in the dog teams’ search area.
