Brisbane 2032 chief Cindy Hook will step down, triggering a global search for her successor

Cindy Hook, chief executive of the Brisbane 2032 organising committee, will step down, ABC and the Nine papers reported on Tuesday. Nine said she will leave early next year and that a global search for a successor will follow as the organisation enters its delivery phase; one other headline said the end of 2026, so the exact date is not settled in our sources. ABC reported that the committee’s president, Andrew Liveris, praised her leadership and that the search will begin immediately. We did not see a reason for the departure.

Leadership changes at an Olympic organising committee are closely watched because the delivery phase, with venues, transport and budgets, is where Games usually run into trouble. The choice of successor will shape who inherits that work.

Nothing changes for ticket-holders or locals now. If you follow the venue and budget debate in Queensland, expect the new chief’s priorities to become part of it.

A leadership change at this stage is routine in the sense that delivery needs different skills from planning, and unsettling in the sense that nobody has said why. Watch for the shortlist and for any change to the Games budget.
