Riyadh airport stays closed as Saudi Arabia investigates why its air defences failed against a deadly Houthi attack

Riyadh’s international airport remained closed on Tuesday as Saudi officials investigated how their air defences failed to stop a deadly Houthi attack, ABC, AP and The Australian reported. Reuters said airlines cancelled flights to Saudi Arabia after the attacks and that the kingdom’s warning system stayed silent beforehand. Bloomberg reported that the Saudi-led force announced a full-scale military campaign against the Houthis, and Reuters said the coalition ordered the evacuation of an oil facility in Sanaa ahead of an operation. ABC reported advice to travel through the Middle East with “a high degree of caution”. We did not see casualty figures in these items.

A closed capital airport and a new military campaign raise the risk of a wider war that draws in other powers, and the IMF’s outlook, as the Guardian reported it, used a Middle East escalation as its example of how oil could reach US$130 a barrel.

If you are due to fly through the Gulf, check your airline and the government’s travel advice before you leave, and expect cancellations. Oil and petrol prices are the other exposure, as the lead story sets out.

The airport closure is the headline; the failed defences are the story. If Saudi Arabia’s interceptors cannot stop cheap drones and missiles, the pressure for outside help rises. Watch whether Washington says it will help defend the kingdom.
