Economic pain strains the Prime Minister and Treasurer as Labor MPs question the Albanese–Chalmers relationship
The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Labor MPs are questioning, behind closed doors, whether Jim Chalmers' relationship with Anthony Albanese has been strained by economic pain. The report was carried by Brisbane Times, WA Today and The Age. At an inner west Sydney auction, a single bid secured a home $150,000 below reserve, and the buyer said she had reached her maximum given current interest rate rises. A mid-century Princes Hill apartment sold for $752,000 to first home buyers on the first weekend after Victoria's new listed-reserve rules. The government is reported to have known for months that the ATO was considering ending credit card payments of tax debts.
Interest rate rises cut how much buyers can borrow, and the mortgage holders who feel it first are those who bought recently. A strained relationship at the top of the government matters because the Prime Minister and Treasurer set the budget and respond to inflation.
If you have a variable mortgage, work out your repayment at one more rate rise and see whether you can cover it. If you pay tax by credit card, ask your accountant about another payment method before any change takes effect.
A government that is arguing with itself about money is not going to calm anyone else about money. The auction results are the voters' verdict in dollars.
