Trump says a championship golf course will replace East Potomac Golf Links in Washington

The Sydney Morning Herald reported on 19 October that Donald Trump unveiled a plan to turn the 36-hole public East Potomac Golf Links in Washington into a championship 18-hole course. Trump announced the plan on Truth Social with Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and architect Tom Fazio, trumpstruth.org recorded. Reuters said he intends to start construction in November despite a judge's order to pause. NTD News reported the course would close on 15 November for 15 months. The Hill said the judge pressed Justice Department lawyers over the takeover. The Guardian reported that Trump says work will start despite the order.

The federal government and the courts are in dispute over whether the site can be redeveloped while a lawsuit is pending. A court order that appears to be ignored tests the limits of executive action before the US midterms on 3 November.

Most Australian readers will see this as a window into how the Trump administration treats court rulings. Golfers who travel to Washington will lose a public course for more than a year.

Trump and Interior Secretary Burgum present the change as a world-class upgrade of a run-down public asset, as Truth Social posts show.

The Hill and the Washington Times report that the judge questioned the administration's account and that critics see a luxury course replacing a public one.

Confirmed: the plan, the November start and the judge's earlier order. Not confirmed: whether the work will actually proceed or whether the court will block it. Watch the next hearing.
