Albertans reject a move towards independence in a referendum, a win for Prime Minister Mark Carney

Al Jazeera and CBC reported on 20 October that Alberta voters rejected a move towards independence, with about 75 per cent supporting remaining in Canada in the early count. The Guardian reported that CBC projected the result, and the Sydney Morning Herald described it as a victory for Prime Minister Mark Carney. Al Jazeera reported that the other option on the ballot was to support a binding referendum on independence, possibly as early as 2027. Carney called the result a clear choice, according to Al Jazeera, and said some of the roughly one quarter who backed the proposal were expressing frustration with Ottawa. Premier Danielle Smith said she was very pleased and would address the province. Jeffrey Rath of the Alberta Prosperity Project said the push for independence would continue, Al Jazeera reported.

A vote to start a path to a binding referendum would have opened years of legal and political uncertainty over oil revenue, federal transfers and borders. A large majority for staying lets the federal government and the province turn to the economic grievances that fuelled the campaign.

For Australians with ties to Canada or exposure to Canadian energy and resource markets, the result removes a near-term source of political risk. The vote does not settle the underlying complaints about federal energy policy.

Carney and Smith, as reported by Al Jazeera, read the outcome as a decisive endorsement of national unity.

Rath and other separatists quoted by Al Jazeera say the roughly one quarter vote shows a durable movement that will keep campaigning, and Carney himself acknowledged frustration with Ottawa.

Confirmed: a majority of about 75 per cent in the early count, reported by Al Jazeera and CBC. Not confirmed: the final official figures, which Elections Alberta had not published when the outlets reported. Watch Smith's address on what the province does next.
