Stewards clear all jockeys over the Caulfield Cup fall that ended with Ohope Wins being euthanised

ABC News reported on 20 October that Racing Victoria stewards finished their inquiry into the Caulfield Cup fall and cleared all jockeys. The stewards said they could not attribute the incident to the careless actions of any one particular rider, ABC News reported. Zahra and Half Yours fell first after becoming tangled in the pack chasing winner Kingswood, and Ohope Wins went over the top of the fallen gelding. Ohope Wins was assessed on track as having a serious racing injury and was put down by on-course veterinarians. Half Yours had superficial cuts and scrapes. Five jockeys were interviewed, ABC News reported. The Sydney Morning Herald published a column saying more information is needed about the report.

Stewards inquire into whether rider conduct broke the rules of racing, so clearing the jockeys closes the disciplinary question without answering why the fall began. Public concern about horse deaths turns on whether racing changes track, pace or field-size rules after such incidents.

Racing fans and punters can expect pressure on the sport ahead of the Melbourne Cup carnival to explain what it will change. Those concerned about animal welfare can read the full stewards' report once it is published in full.

Racing Victoria stewards, as reported by ABC News, concluded the fall was not caused by careless riding and cleared every jockey interviewed.

A Sydney Morning Herald column argued that the released report leaves open questions and that the sport owes the public more detail about the cause.

Confirmed: all jockeys cleared and Ohope Wins euthanised, reported by ABC News. Not confirmed: any rule or track change, or a veterinary finding on the injury. Watch for Racing Victoria's response ahead of the spring carnival.
