Build Canada Homes turns one with nearly 10,000 units under agreement
Build Canada Homes launched on Sept. 14, 2025 with $13 billion in capital. The Build Canada Homes Act received Royal Assent on June 18, 2026, setting it up to become a Crown corporation, and Evan Siddall was named its first board chair in August. Its direct-build program covers six federal sites. By March the government said agreements for nearly 10,000 units had been signed. CBC asked on Monday whether it can scale fast enough. Independent analysts caution that many numbers are commitments, not finished homes.
Housing is the federal government's signature promise, and the agency's completions will be the test.
If you are waiting on affordable or modular housing, look at your province's agreements with the agency.
Ask for completions, not agreements. When the agency publishes a count of finished homes, that is the real number.
