The CAQ goes from government to zero seats; Premier Fréchette loses Trois-Rivières
The Coalition Avenir Québec, which governed Quebec from 2018, won no seats on Oct. 5, according to CBC and CTV. Premier Christine Fréchette, who took over from François Legault in April and moved from the Sanguinet riding to her hometown of Trois-Rivières, lost that race. The CAQ took about 13.3% of the vote, according to Courthouse News citing Élections Québec. Before the vote Ms. Fréchette had said she intended to remain leader whatever happened.
A party that won 90 seats in 2022 disappearing is a record collapse. It also removes the party that had been the main federalist-leaning alternative to the PQ for francophone voters.
If you work in the Quebec public service or depend on programs the CAQ introduced, expect a review. Policy files may reopen.
Whether Ms. Fréchette stays is the first signal. A leaderless, seatless party cannot do much; a quick leadership race could rebuild a caucus from the ground up.
