Russia tells the WHO there is no plague case after a lab worker's death. The pathogen is still unnamed
Russian authorities told the World Health Organization on Oct. 6 that the illness of a woman who worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute first looked like an ordinary respiratory infection, and that no plague case has been recorded in Irkutsk. The WHO says no cause of death has been officially confirmed and has asked for details. Nearly 200 contacts are under medical observation, and Russia says tests found no dangerous pathogens in them. The WHO rated the risk moderate to low for Irkutsk, low for Russia and very low for the European region.
Plague is treatable with antibiotics, but a respiratory form that spreads between people would be serious. Uncertainty about the pathogen is what drives the headlines.
The risk to Canada is low.
The facts to wait for are the pathogen name and any further cases among contacts.
