The TSX gains 0.37% to 35,649.51 and the loonie firms to 70.29 US cents
The S&P/TSX Composite Index closed at 35,649.51, up 130.96 points, according to a Canadian Press close report. Trading Economics shows the same level, a 0.37% gain. Canadian Press attributed the move to technology; BBN Times pointed to utilities, telecoms and ATCO, whose shares rose on the Emera announcement. The Canadian dollar traded at 70.29 US cents, from 70.16 on Monday, or C$1.4227 per U.S. dollar. In New York the S&P 500 rose 0.58% to 7,818.93 and closed above 7,800 for the first time, West Texas Intermediate settled near US$89.97 and gold near US$4,187.
The two explanations for the TSX gain, technology and utilities, point to a market looking for safe growth. A firmer loonie eases import costs a little.
If you hold a broad Canadian index fund, Tuesday (Oct. 6) was another small gain.
The index is still below the 36,458 it closed at on Aug. 10. The loonie's move is small; 70 US cents is the level to watch.
