Elon Musk calls on Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan to leave Canada. Premier Moe answers: "No"
Elon Musk posted on X on Wednesday that Quebec should separate from Canada, and that Alberta and Saskatchewan should too, saying they would be better off, according to The Globe and Mail, CTV News, CP24 and Global News. He was reacting to Quebec's premier-designate saying that independence will be realized one day. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe quote-replied "No." Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's office said her government, caucus and party support Alberta remaining in Canada. The Toronto Star reported that Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa is tracking allegations of foreign interference in the Alberta referendum.
Mr. Musk is a high-profile outsider commenting on a vote that is 12 days away. Whether or not it changes anyone's ballot, it hands both sides material: separatists a famous voice, unity campaigners an example of outside interference.
If you live in Alberta, this does not change what is on the ballot. Elsewhere, expect a spike in the volume of online posts about separation.
Mr. Musk has a right to an opinion, and Canadians can ignore it. Treating a social-media post as interference gives it more weight than it deserves.
A foreign billionaire with a huge platform urging provinces to leave, days before a vote, is the kind of influence the new registry was meant to expose.
Watch for any change in polls. If Alberta's Yes side moves after the post, the effect is real. If it does not, this is noise in a campaign decided by turnout.
