A lawyer asks a court to force Quebec's legislators to swear the oath to the King

A lawyer asked a court to order members of Quebec's National Assembly to swear the oath to the King, Global News reported on Wednesday, a day after CTV News reported that the incoming premier had taken a first step toward abolishing the monarchy in Quebec. Quebec law requires new members to swear the oath before taking their seats. The PQ campaigned on a bill to remove the requirement.

The oath is a small test of the PQ's limits: it can pass a bill but a minority needs help to do so.

No effect on you directly.

Watch whether PQ members take the oath at swearing-in. A symbolic refusal would be the first clash with Ottawa.
