The TSX gains 0.3% as energy offsets a falling Wall Street. The loonie edges up as yield spreads narrow
The S&P/TSX Composite Index closed at 35,145.38, up 103.52 points, or 0.30%, according to BNN Bloomberg and Trading Economics, after falling 1.7% on Wednesday. Energy stocks led as oil topped US$90 a barrel. The Canadian dollar traded at 70.22 US cents from 70.14 on Wednesday, per the Canadian Press, and DailyDrop's quote feed has USD/CAD at 1.4224. In New York the S&P 500 fell 0.47% to 7,765.36, West Texas Intermediate settled near US$91.5, up about 3.6%, and gold near US$4,157.
Toronto's heavy energy weighting made it the better place to be on a day when Wall Street fell.
A small recovery after a big fall. If you hold energy stocks you gained; if you hold U.S. tech you lost.
Watch oil. If crude holds above US$90, Toronto can keep outperforming. If the Saudi explosions fade, so will the lift.
