Hurricane Isaias nears the Gulf Coast; Shell halts four fields
Hurricane Isaias strengthened to a Category 2 storm and is forecast to make landfall on the U.S. Gulf Coast late Friday or Saturday, according to CBS News, NBC News and Reuters. Alabama, Florida and Georgia are under states of emergency, CBS reported. Shell said it halted production at its Mars, Ursa, Olympus and Vito fields and finished evacuations, FinancialJuice reported.
The Gulf produces a large share of U.S. offshore oil. A storm that interrupts it can lift fuel prices on top of the Middle East risk premium.
Canadian refiners and drivers feel U.S. price moves within days. Travel to the Gulf states should be reconsidered.
Watch the landfall point. A track away from Louisiana's refineries would ease the price pressure quickly.
