U.S. plan to livestream a Fort Hood shooter's execution draws bipartisan fire

The Pentagon plan to livestream the firing-squad execution of Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter, drew criticism from lawmakers in both parties, the Associated Press, The New York Times and Al Jazeera reported. Vice-President JD Vance said he would not watch it. Reuters said Republican opposition is widening and that Mr. Trump is still weighing whether to allow broadcasting. Reuters also reported that the head of the FCC deferred to the Pentagon on airing it. The reports we read did not give a final decision.

Public executions are rare in the modern U.S., and a livestream would break with decades of practice and raise legal and ethical questions.

No direct effect in Canada, where capital punishment has been abolished. It does shape how Canadian leaders talk about the U.S. justice system.

Watch for a court challenge and for a formal Pentagon decision. Until then it remains a plan, not a policy.
