The TSX gained 1.5% and Wall Street rose on Friday. Gold climbed 1.4% and WTI edged up to US$91.85

The S&P/TSX Composite Index closed at 35,664.62 on Friday, up 1.48%, according to DailyDrop's quote feed; Yahoo Finance Canada reported a rise of more than 500 points. The S&P 500 gained 0.59% to 7,811.54, the Nasdaq 0.64% to 27,366.17 and the Dow 0.83% to 51,654.95. The 10-year Treasury yield ended at 5.244%. WTI settled at US$91.85, up 0.39%, and gold rose 1.43% to US$4,216.3. USD/CAD closed at 1.4254, up 0.2%. Reuters reported that U.S. consumer sentiment deteriorated further in October. Bloomberg said the Canadian dollar weakened on the jobs data.

Equities rose even as jobs fell, which suggests investors were pricing less risk of higher rates. A 10-year yield above 5.2% still keeps borrowing costs high.

Mortgage rates track bond yields. If you plan to renew soon, the next jobs and inflation figures matter more than one day's stock move.

Falling rate-hike odds and a stronger stock market are consistent with a soft landing.

Weak consumers, high yields and heavy reliance on AI earnings make the rally look fragile.

Canada's market is closed Monday, so the next test is Tuesday. Watch the 10-year yield against 5.25% and WTI against US$90.
