Russian missiles hit a Kyiv power plant with no warning to Ukraine. Twelve U.S. senators urge Trump to drop the diesel deal
A Russian ballistic-missile strike hit the Darnytsia heat and power plant in Kyiv on Tuesday night, and Mr. Zelenskyy said Ukraine got no warning from its partners, The Guardian, Reuters, Radio-Canada and Le Devoir reported. The Guardian linked this to a U.S. threat to halt intelligence sharing; Reuters said Mr. Trump insists intelligence is still shared. Reuters and The Guardian reported that SpaceX has restricted Starlink in Ukraine, disrupting military missions. Tolls differ: Reuters two dead, CBC three across Ukraine, The Kyiv Independent four dead and 25 hurt. Twelve U.S. senators, six of them Republicans, urged Mr. Trump to rescind the Russian diesel deal, CBC and Reuters reported, and Italy's Giorgia Meloni called it a "very risky choice".
Strikes on power plants as winter nears, restrictions on satellite internet and doubts about intelligence sharing all hit Ukraine's defence at once, while the diesel deal splits Mr. Trump's own party.
Diesel and heating-fuel prices are the channel for Canadians. Canadian firms such as Dominion Dynamics are already supplying equipment to Ukraine.
Critics say the diesel deal rewards Moscow while it strikes civilians and that allies should say so, as Mr. Carney did earlier this week.
Mr. Trump defended the deal, Reuters reported; we did not see his reasoning in the headlines we read.
The "energy ceasefire" announced on Sunday is under strain. Watch for a Kremlin statement, for any move by Congress on the diesel deal, and for what Washington says on Starlink and intelligence.
