Quebec's transition begins as St-Pierre Plamondon meets Fréchette
Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, who will lead a minority Parti Québécois government, met outgoing premier Christine Fréchette on Tuesday to begin the transfer of power, Global News and the Journal de Québec reported. La Presse said he came away satisfied, that Ms. Fréchette offered full cooperation for an orderly transition, and that the tariff war and the Churchill Falls agreement with Newfoundland and Labrador are at the top of the priorities. Separately, the PQ asked for a judicial recount in Champlain, in the Mauricie region, where Conservative candidate Adriana Szalontai won by 191 votes over the PQ's René Branchaud, per La Presse, Radio-Canada, Le Devoir and TVA Nouvelles.
A minority government will need allies for every bill, and a recount in a single riding could matter in a close legislature.
Quebecers should expect early decisions on trade and energy files. Others will see the PQ's sovereignty plans become a national topic alongside Alberta's vote.
Watch the recount timetable and the first cabinet announcements; they will show whether the PQ leads with the economy, as it says, or with sovereignty.
