Three Canadian Armed Forces reservists are charged in the kidnapping of a crypto exchange owner. Stolen military ammunition was recovered

Toronto police announced on Wednesday that a third member of the Canadian Armed Forces and four other people were arrested and charged in a kidnapping investigation that earlier led to the arrest of two reservists, CBC reported. CTV News and CP24 said the abduction targeted the victim’s cryptocurrency assets, and La Presse described the victim as the owner of a cryptocurrency exchange platform. Global News reported that Sachintha Fernando, 22, and James Moreau, 29, were arrested on Aug. 11 and face 49 charges in total, including kidnapping for ransom and forcible confinement. The Globe and Mail reported 2,500 rounds of ammunition, about half of them blanks, allegedly stolen from the military, and said firearms and illicit drugs were also found, according to the police chief. La Presse spoke of hundreds of cartridges. Chief Myron Demkiw said “no one is above the law,” per the National Post.

Ammunition allegedly taken from military stocks and a violent crime allegedly committed by serving members raise questions about oversight in the reserves.

No direct effect on the public; the charges will be tested in court. Watch for the Armed Forces’ own response.

The open facts are how the ammunition left military control, whether it is all accounted for, and what the Armed Forces will do about the three members. Treat the amount as unsettled until police or the military give a number.
