TD and BMO are named in a U.S. report on “debanking”

A report ordered by Donald Trump names nine U.S. banks accused of discriminating against conservative customers, and TD and BMO are among them, The Globe and Mail, BNN Bloomberg, CTV News, CP24 and Radio-Canada reported. The Globe described the accusation as discrimination against MAGA and conservative customers. We did not see examples, the banks’ responses or any penalties.

Both banks operate in the United States, so a political and regulatory fight over who can hold an account could reach their U.S. businesses.

No effect on Canadian accounts is reported. Watch for statements from the banks.

Supporters of the report say banks should not close accounts over political views.

We did not see the banks’ responses, so no counter-argument is on record in the reports we read.

Wait for the banks’ replies and for any follow-up from regulators before drawing conclusions.
