Ontario keeps three career colleges off OSAP until at least 2030
Ontario extended its OSAP ban for three career colleges until at least 2030, the Globe and Mail, CP24 and CTV News reported. In early October the province raised the alarm about six private career colleges and accused them of taking advantage of OSAP, Global News said, and it reported that the OPP has yet to open a formal probe into alleged “egregious” use. CBC reported that families in Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury are under financial stress after the province paused OSAP for private college students. Global News also reported that the Liberals allege Ford government ministers attended the campus opening of one suspect college months after inspectors probed it; that is one outlet and an opposition claim.
Student aid paid to colleges that did not deliver training leaves students with debt and no credential.
If you are enrolled at a private career college in Ontario, check whether it is still approved for OSAP.
Blocking colleges suspected of abusing the program protects students and public money.
Families are already under financial stress after the pause, as CBC reported from Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury, and the opposition says the response has been slow.
Watch for the OPP’s decision on a formal probe and for how current students are helped.
