Ottawa weighs legal action against Stelco’s owner

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said on Wednesday that “everything is on the table” as Ottawa considers a range of legal options against Stelco’s American owner, after the company rejected the government’s demand to halt layoffs at its Hamilton plant, CBC and CTV News reported. Global News and the Globe and Mail said she described penalties including fines and a forced sale of assets if the layoffs proceed. The National Post reported that the union confirmed layoffs are under way, and that there is still no court filing. Global News put the number of affected workers at up to 500.

It tests whether Ottawa can enforce job promises attached to a foreign takeover when tariffs change the economics of a plant.

If you work in Hamilton steel or its supply chain, watch for a court filing and for any change to the 500 figure.

Ottawa’s position is that takeover commitments must be honoured and that a court can enforce them.

The company’s position, as reported by the Toronto Star, is that U.S. tariffs of 50% on its products are behind the layoffs.

A threat is not a filing. The signals are a company filing, a revised job plan or talks about a sale. Until one arrives, treat 500 as the ceiling.
