Hitachi announces $479-million plan for a transformer insulation factory in London, Ont.
Hitachi announced on Friday, October 16, a $479-million plan to build a transformer insulation factory in London, Ont., per Global News and two Google News feeds. The facility would cover 21,000 square metres. It would be the first in Canada to produce pressboard, a material made from paper, according to the reports. The dollar figure is the company's own as carried by the outlets. A start date, opening year, headcount and any government funding were not reported in the material reviewed.
Transformers are a bottleneck for grid expansion, and a domestic source of a key insulating component can shorten supply chains for utilities. London gains skilled manufacturing jobs if the plan goes ahead, which also strengthens suppliers and training programs nearby.
If you work in skilled trades, manufacturing or electrical supply, watch for hiring and training notices from Hitachi and the City of London. Local suppliers can check procurement announcements.
The grid needs transformers, and transformers need parts. Whether it is built on time matters more than the number announced.
