Montreal police suspend officers over allegations the mayor calls very serious

The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal suspended police officers over allegations that the city's mayor called very serious, Le Devoir and Google News reported on Friday, October 16. Radio-Canada earlier reported a 32-year-old officer was suspended for allegedly urinating on homeless people while in uniform. Later reports, including Le Devoir's, said two officers were suspended. La Presse said one of two officers from neighbourhood station 21 allegedly urinated on a person experiencing homelessness. The allegations have not been tested in court and no statement from the officers was seen.

Trust between police and people who sleep outside is already fragile, and an incident like this can deter people from reporting crimes or seeking help. The case also tests how quickly a force and its oversight bodies act and communicate.

If you have a complaint or information about police conduct in Quebec, the province's police ethics and investigation bodies take reports directly. Follow the SPVM's own statement for the count of officers.

One officer or two, the question is the same: how fast does the force act and how openly does it say so?
