UNICEF says children are over one in four Ebola cases in Congo but roughly one in three deaths

UNICEF said children make up over one in four confirmed Ebola cases but roughly one in three deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the WHO's Africa office reported the same pattern. MSF said its treatment centre in Butembo, North Kivu, recorded 24 deaths among 30 children, most under five, between June and September 2026. UNICEF said seven in ten children under five with confirmed Ebola had died as of late September. The WHO has described the outbreak as the country's largest on record.

Children dying at a higher rate than their share of cases suggests they are reaching care later or are more vulnerable. Orphaning and separation, which UNICEF counted in the thousands, add a second crisis. The outbreak's size makes it an international response issue.

Canadians can give to relief agencies working in the region. Travellers should follow Public Health Agency of Canada advice. The risk to people in Canada is considered separate from the local crisis.

Relief agencies like UNICEF and MSF emphasize that children are left behind in the response and that the youngest face the greatest risk.

The WHO emphasizes treatment and the new vaccine hopes that raise the chance of reducing deaths.

Confirmed: children are over a quarter of cases and about a third of deaths per UNICEF and WHO. Counts differ by source and date. Watch for updated figures from WHO and UNICEF.
