Quebec Liberals choose André Fortin as parliamentary leader as the party doubles its caucus to 40 members
Quebec Liberal leader Charles Milliard named André Fortin, the member for Pontiac, parliamentary leader, Radio-Canada, Le Devoir and La Presse reported on 18 October. Madwa Nika-Cadet, member for Bourassa-Sauvé, became chief whip, Filomena Rotiroti caucus chair and Julie White deputy leader, Radio-Canada reported. The Liberals kept official opposition status after the 5 October election, rising from 18 to 40 members. Liberal members are to be sworn in on Monday afternoon at the National Assembly, a few days after the Parti Québécois members. Québec solidaire members are sworn in Tuesday and Conservative members Thursday.
Official opposition status gives the Liberals the main role in questioning the Parti Québécois government and the largest opposition resources. The parliamentary leader runs daily strategy in the Assembly.
Quebec residents following the new government will see the Liberals as the main opposition voice in question period. The swearing-in schedule shows when each party can start work.
Liberal officials present the lineup as a team ready to hold the government to account with a doubled caucus.
Other parties, including Québec solidaire and the Conservatives, have their own members to be sworn in and will compete for attention in the Assembly.
Confirmed: Fortin's role, the other officers and the swearing-in dates. Not confirmed: the Liberals' first legislative priorities. Watch this afternoon's swearing-in and the first Assembly sitting for how the Liberals position themselves.
