Landaluce announces he will leave the mayor’s office in Algeciras on Sunday, October 25, to avoid the no-confidence motion by the PP and Vox

The mayor, who denies the accusations of two PP members, announced his exit in a social media video three days before the planned vote.

The mayor of Algeciras (Cádiz), José Ignacio Landaluce, announced on Monday, October 19, that he will leave office on Sunday the 25th, thereby avoiding the no-confidence motion filed by the PP and Vox, planned for three days later, according to Europa Press and ABC. He did so in a video posted on his social media, and 20minutos specifies that he will make his resignation effective that Sunday. Teleprensa puts the vote on October 28 and says the motion was registered by the twelve PP councilors who broke with him and the four from Vox, with Jacinto Muñoz as candidate. 20minutos attributes the motion to the PSOE and Vox, a difference that does not appear in the other outlets. Andalucía Información reports that Landaluce says “the truth will come to light” and that he has been mayor for more than 15 years.

The reports link his exit to complaints by two women members of the PP alleging sexual assault, according to Artículo14, which reported on October 13 that twelve PP councilors withdrew their support and resigned from their posts in the municipal government. That same report notes that the PP’s Cádiz provincial leadership asked him to resign immediately and that the vice president of the Junta, Antonio Sanz, backed the demand. eldiario.es recalls that in December 2025 Landaluce suspended his party membership and stepped down as head of the local PP after a complaint by the PSOE to the Supreme Court Prosecutor’s Office for sexual harassment, embezzlement and influence peddling, charges he denies. According to Andalucía Información, his last act as mayor will be on Saturday the 24th, handing the baton of office to the Christ of Medinaceli.

Macron rejects the resignation of Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, who admits a “loss of control” in the riots

French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, October 19, rejected the resignation offered by Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez after Saturday’s riots, according to Europa Press, El País and El Mundo. The Élysée justified the decision by the need for “continuous command of the security forces in the current context,” according to El Mundo, and Macron asked him to deploy “as soon as possible” new ways of acting against violent groups, according to Europa Press and El País. ABC reported that Nuñez acknowledged a “loss of control” in “some cities” during riots for which around 60,000 officers were deployed. Infobae reports that Macron admitted failures of forecasting and intelligence and that the toll stands at 2,400 arrests and more than 500 injured police officers. La Vanguardia speaks of more than 2,000 lootings and says the minister acknowledged his responsibility for not anticipating the severity of the clashes. El País details that the request to Nuñez concerns methods of police intervention against the most violent groups.

Telefónica, Orange, Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom sign a letter of intent to bid jointly for European satellite spectrum against Starlink

Telefónica, Orange, Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom signed a letter of intent on Monday, October 19, to study a joint bid for the mobile satellite services spectrum that Europe will put on the market, according to ABC and Expansión. El Español adds that the four operators would contribute their terrestrial infrastructure and coordination functions, but would not invest directly in a satellite constellation, for which they will look for a satellite partner yet to be chosen. Xataka Móvil notes that the alliance would offer open, non-discriminatory access to other mobile operators to provide direct-to-device services.

According to Bloomberg, as picked up by Light Reading, the band is the 2 GHz one and the current licenses expire in May 2027. Expansión reports that the United States is threatening Europe with “devastating” retaliation if the spectrum is limited to Starlink. The outlets agree that this is a first step: according to El Español, no company has been created and the call for spectrum depends on the EU approving its rules.

Unions register the November 11 general strike for housing and the CEOE announces it will challenge it

The main union confederations and the smaller ones registered the call for the November 11 general strike for housing at the Labor Ministry on Monday, October 19, a 24-hour stoppage, according to El País, which quotes the slogan “This general strike belongs to the street.” Diario de León reported on October 7 that UGT had confirmed that date, and Artículo14 details that the stoppage is called by CSI, UGT, CCOO, CGT and CNT, among other organizations, with territorial backing from CIG, ELA and LAB.

The president of the CEOE, Antonio Garamendi, announced the same Monday that the employers’ association will challenge the strike, which he called “electoral,” according to 20minutos and eldiario.es. He maintained that the call has been “laced” with labor issues to make it look legal, but that it is political in nature, and he linked it to the general election on November 29, according to eldiario.es. The paper does not report a date for filing the appeal.

A Miami judge signs an arrest warrant for Raúl Castro over the 1996 shooting down of two Brothers to the Rescue planes

A Miami judge, Ariana Fajardo Orshan, signed an arrest warrant for former Cuban president Raúl Castro over the 1996 shooting down of two planes of the Brothers to the Rescue organization, in which four people died, according to El País, ABC and Europa Press. ABC explains that the warrant is based on evidence that Castro conspired with spies to commit first-degree murder, and 20minutos adds that Cuban spies operating in Florida gathered information on the organization’s flights and passed it on to locate them.

Univision reports that it is a state warrant, with no right to bail, announced by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier at Florida International University. According to Univision, Castro is 95 years old and Uthmeier said he knows Castro will not come to Miami, but that they are ready to prosecute the case there. The network adds that the warrant is separate from the federal indictment of May 2026 that includes Castro and five other former Cuban military officers. Europa Press attributes the warrant to the US Prosecutor’s Office, while other outlets speak of a Miami judge, and none reports an official reaction from Havana.
