Flydubai co-pilot who attacked the captain had been barred from flying in Oman, WSJ reports

Sources told the Wall Street Journal that the Omani co-pilot suspected of attacking the captain of a Dubai to Tel Aviv flight had earlier been barred from flying by Oman over concerns that he held radical views. The UAE attorney general says the co-pilot attacked the captain with the cockpit's crash axe in an attempted terrorist act. The Boeing was carrying 174 people. Passengers helped to overpower the attacker, and two off-duty pilots landed the aircraft safely in Israel. The suspect was handed to the UAE. Officials have not publicly confirmed his motive. An Italian newspaper's account of a plan to crash the plane in the desert is attributed to Israeli intelligence and is not corroborated.

A cockpit attack by one of the two pilots is the scenario the rules on cockpit access were written to prevent. The case raises questions about how airlines check pilots' backgrounds when states do not share information, and Oman and Israel have no diplomatic relations.

If you fly on a Gulf carrier, nothing changes at the airport today. Expect aviation regulators to ask about pilot vetting and cockpit procedures in the weeks ahead.

The question to watch is the vetting gap: who knew what about the co-pilot, and when. An inquiry that shows a state had flagged him and no airline was told would reshape how pilot records are shared.
