Jeffrey Archer, novelist, peer and convicted perjurer, dies aged 86 on the day his last book is published
Jeffrey Archer died at home on Monday, aged 86, HarperCollins said. He was a Conservative MP, deputy chairman of the party and, from 1992, a life peer. His books sold more than 300 million copies. In 2001 he was jailed for four years for perjury and perverting the course of justice. His last novel, Adam and Eve, was due out on 6 October. Tributes came from the Queen, Nadhim Zahawi and Denis MacShane.
Archer was one of Britain's best-selling authors and a symbol of the Thatcher-era Conservative world; his life ran from Parliament to prison.
His books remain in print.
He liked to be remembered as a storyteller. The obituaries will argue over whether the scandals or the books come first.
