Cancer is rising faster among adults under 50, international research finds
The Guardian reported that cancer rates are rising more quickly among younger people, according to international research. Sky News called the rise in cases among adults under 50 "concerning", and The Times described a "mystery" rise. The headlines do not give the size of the increase or name the cancers; we will add figures once the study is published in full and checked.
Screening programmes and cancer services are built around older people. A rise among the under-50s challenges both.
If you notice symptoms such as persistent bowel changes, bleeding or unexplained weight loss, see a GP whatever your age.
The question to ask of any such study is how much is more testing and how much is more disease. Look for incidence and death rates together.
