Boots is sold to Canada's Weston family in a £6.7 billion deal
Wittington Investments, the Weston family holding company, agreed to buy Boots from Sycamore Partners and the Pessina family for about £6.7 billion ($8.9 billion) including debt. Fairfax Financial is backing it with up to $2.3 billion of equity and is expected to take a 50% stake; Wittington keeps operational control and Galen Weston will chair Boots. The deal covers UK and Ireland retail, Boots Opticians, No7 Beauty and the Thailand and franchised businesses. Boots has about 1,800 stores and more than 50,000 staff. Completion is expected in the first quarter of 2027, subject to regulatory approval.
Boots is the UK's biggest high-street pharmacy chain. After the Walgreens buyout by private equity, a family-controlled owner with a long horizon is a change of stability.
Nothing changes at the tills. Watch for any news on store closures or pharmacy services.
A long-term owner may invest in stores and healthcare services rather than cut costs for a sale.
The statement says nothing about jobs.
Ask the question the buyer has not answered: how many of the 1,800 stores stay open? The next update will be the competition review.
