Russia hits Kyiv with a massive attack on Putin's birthday
The Financial Times reported deadly Russian strikes that cut power in several Kyiv districts, Sky News reported a massive attack with a Kyiv resident saying Europe will be next, and the Guardian reported Ukraine saying Russia bombed an apartment block as a "birthday gift" to Putin. The Kyiv Independent reports a residential building hit in Pryluky and disruption to power and water in Kyiv. It reports at least 30 dead; this toll is not yet confirmed by a second outlet.
Attacks on the grid ahead of winter aim to wear down civilians. Europe's debate over its own defence is sharpened by each strike.
No direct effect on UK services; more pressure on defence spending in the Budget.
Treat the death toll with care until the Ukrainian authorities publish a list.
