Israel says Britain's Jerusalem consulate has stopped working. Miliband says the building stays open as the 'UK Mission'
Israel's foreign minister Gideon Sa'ar said on 8 October that the British consulate general in East Jerusalem had ceased to function as a consulate, that the Consul General and 19 other diplomats are leaving, and that a task force of no more than seven may continue in a limited role. He said British sanctions on Israeli settlers had led to the decision, and Israel had ordered the closure after Britain and other countries restricted trade with settlements. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said that after talks with the Israeli government the building would not close and would be called the UK Mission, Jerusalem. Britain said it would not retaliate for now and would build back its presence. The Times, Sky News, the BBC, the Independent, Euronews and Middle East Eye covered it.
The status of Jerusalem is among the most sensitive questions in the region, and Britain's consulate there deals with Palestinians. The dispute shows that sanctions on settlers can bring a diplomatic price for Britain.
If you are travelling to Jerusalem or the West Bank, check the Foreign Office website for changes to consular help.
Britain was right to sanction violent settlers and to keep its building.
The government has lost diplomatic capacity in a place where it needs eyes and access.
The test is staffing: seven diplomats is not a consulate. Watch for whether London rebuilds the team, and whether Israel allows it.
