Hurricane Isaias nears major status as the Gulf coast prepares for landfall
Reuters reported that Hurricane Isaias strengthened as the U.S. Gulf coast prepared for landfall, and Bloomberg said it was nearing major status and puts 500,000 barrels a day of refining capacity at risk. FinancialJuice, citing MMA, said 1.3 million barrels a day, or 63% of U.S. Gulf oil production, has been shut in. A White House adviser said refineries are turning back on and that relief is coming soon.
Gulf output and refining supply fuel and crude, so a landfall adds to a market already rattled by the Iran war.
Pump prices follow crude and refined product prices with a lag, so a hurricane on top of the war is a risk to fuel costs.
The landfall point and the damage to refineries will decide whether this is a short blip or a longer squeeze.
