Royal Navy sailor appears in court charged with spying for Russia. He is held until 16 October

Teddy Young, 24, a Royal Navy warfare intelligence rating, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 8 October. He has been charged with two offences under the National Security Act 2023: obtaining protected information that could benefit a foreign power and preparing to disclose it. The alleged offences took place between November 2024 and May 2025. AP, Euronews, ITV and the South China Morning Post reported that the case concerns Russia. The Metropolitan Police said he tried to make contact with a potential threat actor on the dark web. He did not enter a plea, and he is remanded in custody until 16 October. The Royal Navy declined to comment.

It is a rare public case of an alleged leak from inside the armed forces to Moscow, at a time when Britain and Germany have just agreed to deepen cooperation against sabotage and cyber threats.

Nothing changes for you directly. The case is a reminder that the government treats hostile-state espionage as a live domestic threat.

Prosecution under the 2023 law shows that the security services can act on a suspect long before any damage is done.

A charge is not a conviction. Details have come from police briefings and the court should test them.

Wait for the 16 October hearing and for any indictment. Police say the case is separate from the Fairford investigation, and nothing published so far links the two.
