Rubio calls the Ukraine war a 'dangerous stalemate' and the Kremlin agrees. U.S. envoys meet Ukrainians in Miami today
Marco Rubio said on 8 October that the war in Ukraine is at a dangerous stalemate, and Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia agrees. Reuters and FinancialJuice reported that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would meet Ukrainian representatives in Miami on Friday, and President Zelenskiy said a Ukrainian team is travelling. Russian bombing killed 33 people in a street in eastern Ukraine, according to Reuters. Ukraine says it hit Russia's largest oil refinery, and drones hit a Yandex data centre. The UK announced new sanctions and Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband visited Kyiv.
When both Washington and Moscow call the war a stalemate, the argument moves to terms, and Europe has to say what it would accept and fund.
A settlement would eventually lower energy and security risks. A stalled one keeps defence spending and prices elevated.
Talking is better than a stalemate, and the Miami meeting shows that talks are moving.
Russia has not changed its demands, and saying 'stalemate' can be used to press Kyiv to concede.
A working session is not a deal. Watch whether European governments are in the room, and what Mr Miliband's 'cannot wait us out' turns into.
