A magnitude 7.6 earthquake strikes Panama and triggers tsunami warnings
Reuters, citing the U.S. Geological Survey, reported a 7.6 magnitude earthquake felt in Panama on 9 October. The Guardian also gave 7.6 and reported tsunami warnings. The BBC gave 7.7 and said buildings were damaged. Initial magnitudes are often revised as data arrive. The reports we saw did not give casualty figures.
A quake of this size can cause serious damage and tsunamis, and Panama's canal and ports matter to global shipping.
There is no direct UK impact reported. If you have travel plans to Central America, check the Foreign Office advice.
Expect the magnitude to be settled and casualty figures to emerge today. Watch for any disruption to canal traffic.
