U.S. Justice Department opens a probe of TV networks over coverage of Trump's press pool

Reuters, the BBC and the New York Times, the latter via FinancialJuice, report that the Justice Department is investigating TV networks over their coverage of the White House press pool. The BBC says the White House had blocked access for CNN, MS Now and Politico, and that the outlets then restricted their pool coverage. A department spokesperson said the antitrust division is 'merely probing', FinancialJuice reported. Separately, Reuters says the head of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) deferred to the Pentagon on whether to air a planned execution on TV.

Antitrust law governs competition between firms, so using it against newsrooms that choose to share or withhold footage would be a novel step with consequences for press freedom.

The UK is not directly affected, but UK broadcasters and agencies depend on the same pooled White House feeds, so access rules there shape what British audiences see.

The department describes the step as a limited inquiry.

Press groups will say the inquiry follows a fight over access and amounts to pressure on critical outlets.

The wording of the department's statement matters more than the headline. Watch for subpoenas, and whether the networks name the pool arrangement as the subject.
