Government launches a flood taskforce and tells it to look at drought as well

The government launched a taskforce to improve Britain's resilience to flooding and to prepare for extreme winter weather, the BBC and GOV.UK reported. Sky News said the group has also been told to start looking at drought. The BBC quoted the Environment Agency as saying about 6.3 million homes and businesses in England remain at risk of flooding.

Britain often swings between floods and drought within months, and the same infrastructure, such as reservoirs and drainage, is involved in both.

If you live in a flood zone, check your risk on the Environment Agency website and consider flood insurance, which for many homes is arranged under the Flood Re scheme.

Ministers say joined-up planning will save money and protect communities.

Critics will say the country has had many reviews already and needs funding, not another panel.

A taskforce is only as good as its remit and its deadline. Watch for a reporting date and whether money for flood defences appears in the 28 October Budget.
