Portugal provisionally suspends Cristiano Ronaldo after he left the national camp

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) provisionally suspended Ronaldo, 41, and opened disciplinary proceedings after he left the national team's camp last month, the BBC, the Guardian, Al Jazeera and Reuters reported. The Guardian and Al Jazeera say he had been critical of the coach, Jorge Jesus. No hearing date has been given.

Ronaldo is Portugal's captain and record goalscorer, so a disciplinary case against him affects the national team's plans and its image.

British fans will notice because Ronaldo's club career included Manchester United, and the row feeds the usual debate about star players and authority.

The federation says no player is above its rules.

Supporters of Ronaldo say a veteran should be able to voice concerns about the coach.

Treat it as a dispute over control. Watch whether the federation sets a hearing before the next international window and whether Ronaldo speaks publicly.
