Trump says it is 'time for Ukraine to get a new president' after Zelenskiy attacks the Russian diesel deal. Mr Burnham reaffirms UK sanctions

On Saturday Mr Trump said it was time for Ukraine to get a new president, after Mr Zelenskiy called the decision to take Russian diesel a weak one and a gift to Mr Putin. Mr Trump also said Mr Zelenskiy had better stop attacks on Russian refineries and that Ukraine should hold an election. Reuters reported seven killed in a Russian attack on Zaporizhzhia. The UK government said Prime Minister Burnham spoke to Mr Zelenskiy, stressed that Russia must agree to an energy ceasefire and promised to intensify sanctions; they are due to meet in person in the coming days. Germany said it will keep its sanctions. Reuters said US, Ukrainian and European negotiators met in Miami.

The row exposes a split between Washington and Kyiv over how to end the war, and puts Britain, a main backer of Ukraine, between them.

Fuel and energy prices depend partly on how sanctions evolve. The government says it will keep up the pressure on Russia, which affects the trade and financial rules firms follow.

Supporters of the U.S. line say a settlement needs flexible leaders, and cheaper diesel helps consumers.

Ukraine and its European allies say Russia is being rewarded while it keeps striking civilians and energy plants.

Watch the Burnham–Zelenskiy meeting, whether other European governments follow Germany in publicly rejecting the U.S. licence, and whether any Miami outcome is announced officially.
